How to Store Your Soy Wax Candles and Keep Them Fresh for Longer

You've invested in a beautiful hand-poured soy wax candle. Now how do you make sure it stays that way? Candle storage is more important than most people realise — and a few simple habits can dramatically extend the life and quality of your candles.

Keep Them Out of Direct Sunlight

Soy wax is sensitive to UV light and heat. Direct sunlight will cause the wax to discolour, soften, or even melt in warm conditions — and it will accelerate the fading of the fragrance oils inside. Store your candles in a cool, shaded spot away from windowsills.

Store in a Cool, Dry Place

The ideal storage temperature for soy wax candles is between 10°C and 25°C. Avoid storing them in bathrooms (humidity affects the wax surface) or near radiators and kitchen heat sources. A drawer, cabinet, or shelf away from heat vents works perfectly.

Keep the Lid On

If your candle comes with a lid — use it. A lid keeps dust off the wax surface and, more importantly, locks in the fragrance between burns. Fragrance oils slowly evaporate when exposed to open air, so a lidded candle will smell stronger and more vibrant when you light it.

Store Upright, Never on Their Side

Soy wax can shift slightly at room temperature, especially in warmer climates. Storing candles on their side can cause the wax to settle unevenly, which affects how it burns. Always store your candles upright and level.

Burn Within 12 Months

Fragrance oils in soy wax have a shelf life. While a properly stored candle will last well beyond a year, for the best scent experience aim to burn your candles within 12 months of purchase. The wax itself doesn't expire, but the fragrance intensity peaks in the first year.

If you're storing candles as gifts, wrap them in tissue paper and place them in a box. This protects against dust, light, and temperature fluctuations — and means they'll be in perfect condition when the occasion arrives.
