You've just unboxed a beautiful new Fiorance Luxe soy wax candle. The fragrance is divine, the vessel is gorgeous — and you're tempted to light it for just a few minutes. Don't.
The first burn is the single most important burn of your candle's life. Here's why, and how to get it right.
Why the First Burn Sets the Stage
Soy wax has a memory. When you burn a candle for the first time, the wax melts in a pattern — and that pattern becomes the template for every burn after. If you extinguish the flame before the melt pool reaches the edge of the vessel, the wax will only ever melt to that same width. This is called tunnelling, and it wastes a significant portion of your candle.
The Golden Rule: Full Melt Pool
Always burn your soy wax candle long enough on the first light for the entire surface to become liquid — edge to edge. For most Fiorance Luxe candles, this takes 2 to 3 hours.
A full melt pool ensures:
- Even, consistent burns every time
- Maximum fragrance throw throughout the room
- No wasted wax around the edges
- A longer candle lifespan overall
Signs You've Nailed It
When the melt pool reaches the glass walls all the way around, you're done for this session. Extinguish the flame, let the wax solidify completely, and you're set up for perfect burns from here on.
What to Do If You've Already Tunnelled
If your candle has tunnelled, wrap a piece of aluminium foil loosely around the top — leaving a small hole in the centre for the flame — and burn it for 30–45 minutes. The reflected heat will melt the high wax walls and level the surface.
At Fiorance Luxe, every candle is hand-poured with a soy wax blend chosen to reward the patient burner. Give your first burn the time it deserves, and your candle will reward you with beautiful, even fragrance until the very last drop.
