If there's one candle care habit worth building, it's this: trim your wick before every single burn. It takes five seconds and makes a world of difference.
Why Wick Length Matters
A wick that's too long burns too hot. This causes the flame to flicker and dance excessively, produces black soot that stains the inside of your candle vessel, and burns through the wax far faster than it should. It can also cause the wick to mushroom — that ugly black carbon ball at the tip — which makes the problem worse with every burn.
With a properly trimmed wick, your flame burns calm, bright, and steady. The fragrance releases at exactly the right temperature, the vessel stays clean, and your candle lasts significantly longer.
The Right Length
The ideal wick length for a soy wax candle is 5mm (about ¼ inch). Any longer and you'll see the problems above. Any shorter and the flame may struggle to stay lit or may sink into the wax.
How to Trim It
Use a wick trimmer, nail clippers, or small scissors — whatever you have. Always trim before lighting, never after. And always let the candle cool completely before trimming, since wax hardens around the wick base and trimming a warm wick can drop debris into the melt pool.
What to Do With a Mushroomed Wick
If you notice a carbon mushroom forming on your burning wick, extinguish the flame, let it cool, snap off the mushroomed tip, and relight. Your flame will immediately calm down.
